Recap

Tough day at the office for the Dirty Reds

The Goulburn Dirty Reds Women’s team remains undefeated after their sixth straight win, although it was anything but light work.

Goulburn defeated the Gungahlin Eagles 26-10, but the Eagles continued to improve as the game went on.

Co-coach Rob Sheekey described the match as the side’s toughest challenge of the season thus far.

“Gungahlin have a more experienced team then Goulburn having played in the 15’s competition last year and they were able to pressure Goulburn throughout the match,” Sheekey said.

“This was a tough but scrappy encounter with very little free flowing action. The match highlighted areas of improvement for Goulburn particularly at scrum time.”

The Reds ran in tries at the fifth, tenth and fifteenth minute but none of them came easily and Gungahlin made them work hard for every point. Gungahlin replied with their own first half try for a half-time lead to Goulburn of 21-5.

Sheekey spoke at half time about a lack of intensity and aggression, and while the Goulburn women worked on that, the Eagles responded in kind.

The second half was an even tougher grind. Neither side scored for ten minutes… not unusual for many teams but for the Goulburn Women’s side, that’s been a rarity this year.

Gungahlin scrapped well at the breakdown and sought to impose themselves with a very physical game.

Goulburn’s first half lead ensured that they never looked in danger of losing, but the honours were probably shared 50-50 in the second half giving Goulburn a clear indication that they’ll need to lift against the Eagles in their next encounter.

The Goulburn Women have next weekend off and will play their next match at the Club’s Sponsor’s Day on July 6 at Poidevin Oval alongside the men’s team.
