Recap

Barbarians through to the Grand Final

By MATT KLEM

The Barbarians played there elimination final against Grammar yesterday at Campese Oval. This is the first time the Barbarians have played Grammar this season so they didn’t know what to expect.

The Barbarians started well with some composed phase play through the forwards and utilised the backs with Hamish Dalglish scoring the first try in the corner.

The Barbarians continued to apply pressure on Grammar with some strong runs from Haydo Collins , Darcy Cooper , Bryce Carey , Jack Purcell and Jonah Ryan leading the backs in attack. This lead up work allowed Toby Klem to score the second try of the match.

Soon after the kick off , Grammar fought their way back scoring a try and converting making the score 12 – 7 . Barbarians kicked off and worked there way back up the field with some great phase work from the forwards , chiming in with the backs making inroads in Grammars defence.

The continual pressure applied by the Barbarians saw cracks in Grammars defence and Bryce Carey crashed over under the posts for a well deserved try .Grammar never gave up all game testing the Barbarian defence on quite a few occasions and really bombarded the Barbarians try line just before half time but the tough Barbarian defence lead by Tyrese  in the backs held them out taking a 19 – 7 lead into half time.

Second half kicked into gear with a see sawing half . Again the Barbarian forwards were strong in both attack and defence . Jack Field made a great run along with twinkle toes Malika stepping a few out wide creating space.

A few infringements crept into the Barbarians game and they were penalised accordingly which put them on the back foot. Tough defence was frustrating Grammar and the tied turned with Grammar giving away some penalties which Jonah Ryan capitalised on and  took a quick tap to run 35 metres and score in the corner.

The Barbarians started to frustrate Grammar both in tough defence  and some great attack. Another penalty saw Toby Klem react taking a quick tap to run 30 meters and score putting the game out of reach 33 -7.

Everybody in the Barbarian team contributed to the team win which sees the Barbarians play Vikings in the GF next weekend.

A fantastic effort by all of our Barbarian team members to reach the Grand Final in there first year .A credit to the guys as they only met the first game on the sidelines and introduced themselves before the first game , so to be put into the Black division 3 games into the season was a great step and to eventually qualify  for the Grand Final in the Gold division is a remarkable effort by the guys , well done guys on a fantastic achievement.

All of the parents and coaching staff are proud of what the boys have achieved this year in making it to the GF. They have done our clubs proud both Goulburn and Yass Rugby
