Strong Kiama Sevens performances for Goulburn rugby sides

The last weekend in February can only mean one thing – Kiama 7s time, and the rapid approach of the rugby season for Goulburn Rugby Union.

The Goulburn Women showed they could more than match it with their Sydney counterparts, after being placed in the Premier division. Their two victories on the day were complete contrasts. They opened the day with a storming 26-0 win over Northern Suburbs, before staging a gutsy comeback win over Eastern Suburbs.

The Reds found themselves trailing 10-0 very early on, but rallied to complete a 21-10 victory, setting themselves up for a top of the table clash with Burraneer. However, Burraneers would prove to be too much for the Goulburn side, running out 15-0 victors.

This would be Burraneers narrowest victory on their way to claiming the Premier Women’s title, which is a testament to Goulburn.

The Goulburn Men were a late inclusion in the competition, following the last-minute withdrawal of Bowral. The men also got off to a flying start, knocking off Broulee and setting themselves up for the day. However, a broken leg to a Hunters Hill women’s player would see the men’s next game against Burraneers played on half a field, while an ambulance attended to the player.

The Burraneers were too strong on the smaller field, completing the club double over Goulburn. The Reds were out to finish the day on a high when they ran on against Shoalhaven, however, the loss of some players due to injury took its toll on the Goulburn side.

The Goulburn sides will now turn their focus to next Saturday’s trials against Wagga Wagga.
