A promising start but no win for Dirty Twos

The Goulburn second grade side showed a lot of promise and even led late the match midway through the second half but weren’t able to christen the season with a home ground win against the Lions.

Despite only being able to assemble a threadbare starting side, Wests experience was evident throughout their 30-21 and they held firmly to possession when they were able to get it.

Goulburn held a 21-20 lead well into the second half having trailed for much of the game, but Wests added two more tries to seal the result.

There was some discrepancy with the size of the Wests win. Both the Goulburn scorer and the referee had it as 25-21, but the Wests scorer had recorded on the new digital system an extra try. In any event, whether it was 25-21 or 30-21, the final result was a deserved win to the Lions.

Best and fairest points for Goulburn went to Ben Todkill (3), Michael McKillop (2), Grant Mooney (1) and debutante Ben Naivaluvou (1). Naivaluvou also picked up the Players’ Player award.
