Goulburn Rugby Roundup – Sunday, 27 April 2025

Happy Sunday,

And welcome to our first full weekend of senior rugby for the Goulburn sides. Mixed results, as is often the case. Our men’s teams last year played in what was called ACT First Division, first grade and second grade. The team we played against were the third and fourth grade teams of each competition. This year we are playing in exactly the same men’s competitions against exactly the same teams, only the competition names have been changed to he less confusing Third and Fourth grade. It’s still POUR first and second grade playing in those grades… hopefully that’s not too confusing.

And just taking this opportunity to advertise… we need someone (or several someones) to write match reports for our senior sides. Unfortunately, I don’t have the available time to continue to write match reports. I’ll continue to do the weekly roundup and match sheets but if we can get volunteers to do the reports it would be of great benefit to our teams. Now onto this weekend’s footy.

ACT Women’s Premiership: In a situation the men’s teams have encountered a few times, the Women’s side weren’t able to pull together a full side for their season opener and return to 15-a-side rugby. But a team of 12 players hung in there though and lost by 51-10 with tries to Keeley Martin and Kelsie Crockford.

ACT Third Grade: Our firsts, playing in the ACT third grade competition, signaled their intent for season 2025 with a dominant 59-28 win over Royals. The match featured a number of returning players who’d had a year off and the welcome return of David Anable to the first grade coaching spot after more than a decade.

ACT  Fourth Grade: In a potent mix of attacking flair and the best defensive effort by a first round Goulburn second grade side, the Dirty Twos led last season’s premiers Royals until the final minute with Royals taking the last gasp victory by 24-21. With an abundance of debutantes and a fire in their belly, this second grade side is looking the goods for a very competitive season.
