Happy Sunday, and Happy Mothers Day!
The Goulburn Rugby Club wishes all of the mum’s involved in the game a wonderful day and we thank them for all they have done, and all they continue to do for us.
Yesterday was Goulburn’s Ladies Day, and the club thanked and celebrated all of the women involved in the club, including not just the women’s team but so many helpers from the president, to the sideline staff and coaches who all directly keep the club running, and all the women whose indirect sacrifices and help make it possible for our players and our games to go ahead.
Sincerely, thank you.
To the rugby. We saw some great games at Poidevin Oval, we just didn’t see any wins unfortunately. The Firsts and Seconds were both very much in their games. First grade scored as many tries as the Vikings and won the second half (by 17-10) but not the match, while second grade trailed 4-3 in the try department but ended a converted try short of the assignment. The Women’s team is showing immense courage and determination, struggling with diabolical player numbers and on-field training of many new players, but with the return of some key players and greater commitment to the team, better things are not far off.
The Fizzy Reds were also in action for Round 2 of the Goulburn Junior Rugby Competition, and I’ll incorporate any pics, socials and stories I can lay my hands on.
Don’t forget… on Wednesday night this week, 14 May, the club is holding a Special General Meeting to consider the nomination for Life Membership of Kevin Fitzsimmons. For those of you that don’t know Kevin, you may be familiar with his name from the Kevin “Bubby” Fitzsimmons Encouragement Award the Club presents at Presentations each year. Kevin was a long time servant of the club who was not only a president but a first grade coach and many other roles. We need at least 20 members (only members can vote) to have a quorum to vote so please help out by being there if you can.
Ok, that’s enough intro. Let’s get to the rugby.
Juniors
Each week we would like to include match reports, pics, social media or ANYTHING from the junior games. If you can message me at cgordon1965@gmail.com or on Facebook (I’m easy to find) and I’ll try to include what I can here. Even if you send it to me today, I will continue to update this story as things come in.

ACT Women’s Premiership: Due to minimal playing numbers, the women’s team played a game of 10s against a red-hot undefeated competition-leading Tuggeranong side by mutual consent. It was mostly one way traffic in the 81-5 ViQueens win, but the Goulburn women literally never gave up and their try ten minutes from full time was a testament to that attitude.
ACT Third Grade: The half time score of 21-5 wasn’t a genuine reflection of Goulburn’s position in the match, but a second half rally that saw Goulburn outscore the Vikings by 3 tries to 1 gave a better indication that Goulburn was up to the standard and up to the task of defeating Tuggeranong. A bit more focus on supporting each other in the first half might have tweaked the result, however Goulburn’s four tries in the 31-22 loss nonetheless earned them a bonus point.
ACT Fourth Grade: Despite scoring the first try, and only losing by one converted try, Goulburn didn’t manage to get the win against Tuggeranong who won by 26 – 19. Lots of enthusiasm, a ton of effort, strong defence and exciting attacking plays by the Dirty Twos. They are playing good football, and even got a bonus point for getting within 7 of the Vikings, but just didn’t quite get the chockies on the day.
