Excitement building for inaugural Goulburn Rugby Old Boys Day

Excitement building for inaugural Goulburn Rugby Old Boys Day

Rugby players from years past will descend on Poidevin Oval next month, as part of Goulburn Rugby’s inaugural Old Boys’ Day on Saturday 19 July.

Men and women who have pulled on the maroon jersey of the Dirty Reds are invited to attend the first of what is hoped to become an annual event.

Goulburn Rugby President Beck Rudd said the aim of the day was to celebrate the club’s history and those who have been part of it.

“Goulburn Rugby has a history which is the envy of most clubs,” she said.

“We are the oldest country rugby club in Australia, and since 1970 have won 25 premierships across the ACT and Illawarra.

“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Goulburn First Grade side’s 13-12 grand final victory over Bowral Blacks, and we’d particularly love to see any players from that squad on the sideline or in the clubhouse cheering our current Reds teams on.”

While the Old Boys’ Day is coinciding the 50th anniversary of that victorious 1975 team, it is hoped former players of all years will attend, ideally pulling an old Reds jersey out of the cupboard for the day.

“We’d love to see the hill and Clubhouse full of old Dirty Reds jerseys, both mens and womens – that would look spectacular,” Rudd said.

“All three Reds teams will be in action on the day, and there will be plenty of entertainment.”

Goulburn’s First Grade side will wear a commemorative jersey in their match against Gungahlin Eagles, with these jerseys to be auctioned off later that night. The jersey is a replica of the 1975 jersey, and it’s expected there will be hot bidding competition for them in the Clubhouse that night.

Kick off times for the day’s matches will be confirmed closer to the date.

For those keen for a trip down memory lane, Goulburn Rugby’s registrar and club historian Chris Gordon has been compiling Goulburn Post stories from the 1975 season, which have been uploaded on the Goulburn Rugby Union History Facebook page.
